COGSWELL & HARRISON 12-BORE 'THE AVANT TOUT' BOXLOCK EJECTOR, serial no. 42918, for 1912, 29 7/8in. "Arcus Steel" nitro barrels (loose), the rib engraved 'COGSWELL & HARRISON. THE AVANT TOUT. 141. NEW BOND ST. & 226 STRAND. LONDON.', and '2' at the breech-end, 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. 1/4 and 1/2 choke, treble-grip action, automatic safety with engraved 'SAFE' detail, plain action, patinated finish, 15 5/8in. stock (pinned at head) with raised comb insert, including 1 3/8in. wooden extension, weight 7lb

Provenance: This gun was produced to an order from our New Bond Street shop and was completed by our craftsmen on 16t February 1912. It was n2 of a non-consecutively numbered matched pair, the n1 gun being 42608. It was built as a twelve bore double barrel side-by-side sidelock ejector. It was fitted with our company's patented assisted opening and ejector mechanism the Avant Tout. It had a conventional top lever, double triggers and an automatic top safety. The forend had snap type fastening.

The barrels were 30" long and were made of fine English Arcus compressed steel. The right barrel was bored with five points of choke and the left with sixteen that is: improved cylinder in the right and approximately half choke in the left. When struck, up and fitted to the action, these barrels weighed 31b 6 oz. The finished and assembled guns displayed good handling characteristics with central balance and each had an overall weight of 6lb 11 0z

The original owner of the pair was Chas A. Jones who took delivery of the guns on 21 February 1912. They were covered by a six year warranty and Mr Jones paid thirty-two guineas for each gun i.e 64gns for the pair. At the same time, an annual strip, clean and regulation service costing 10s 6d per time was offered on each gun.
