A BEHEMOTHIC 4-BORE SNIDER-PATENT BREECH-LOADING FOWLING PIECE SIGNED CARTWRIGHT, NORWICH, no visible serial number,
circa 1865 and probably converted from muzzle-loading, with 43 1/2in. octagonal to sixteen-sided to round browned laminate barrel, carved girdle at the intersection, bead fore-sight, octagonal form receiver with flip-open reblued breech-block (some shallow pitting), sprung thumb-catch, the nocksform stamped with Snider's trademark, the block marked 'SNIDER'S PATENT', plain reblued top-tang and lock, the lock signed on the bar 'CARTWRIGHT, NORWICH', heavy walnut half-stock chequered at the wrist and fitted with a later pistol-grip spur in wood, iron furniture, twin barrel keys and under-barrel heavy duty ramrod


Provenance: This huge shotgun is most likely the product of William Cartwright who took over the business started by his father Henry in Rampant Horse Street in 1841. William ran the business between 1863 and 1869
