A .295 (ROOK) SINGLE-BARRELLED TOPLEVER HAMMER ROOK AND RABBIT RIFLE, serial no. 5053,
circa 1878, 28in. octagonal black powder barrel, the breech end engraved 'HOLLAND & HOLLAND', 98, NEW BOND ST. LONDON. .295 SEMI SMOOTH BORE', wave cut top flat with three folding leaf sights marked '50', '100' and '150' with white metal sight lines, the muzzle with folding aperture / miniature moonsight, the breech end mounted with a telescopic sight in quickly-detachable mounts, the eyepiece with leather pad, the tube engraved 'HOLLAND & HOLLAND. 98 NEW BOND STREET. LONDON. PATENT' (one collar lock screw missing), ornately carved percussion fence, rebounding back-action lock signed 'HOLLAND & HOLLAND', border and acanthus scroll engraving, retaining some colour-hardening and finish, 14 5/8in. well-figured pistolgrip stock, mounted at the wrist with a Lyman folding adjustable peep sight, engraved domed steel pistolgrip-cap and steel buttplate, fore-end with cross-pin release and horn finial, weight 6lb. 1oz. (unscoped) and 7lb. (with scope) in a brass-cornered leather case with provision for telescopic sight and with an empty Eley Bros illustrated cartridge carton, together with an article from the April 21st 1877 edition of 'The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News' entitled 'A Rook Rifle Trial' covering Mssrs. Holland & Holland's 'somewhat severe' trial of their non-fouling rook rifle in the private grounds of 'the senior member of the Bond-Street form, near Willesdon'
