for 1870, 30in. nitro reproved bold damascus barrels the sunken rib engraved 'S. GRANT. 67A ST. JAMES'S STREET LONDON' and '2', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl. in both, action incorporating E.C. Hodges patent extractor mechanism, patent No. 2966 of 15th November 1866, use number 435, the slender underlever swinging out to the left side, carved percussion fences, non-rebounding back action locks with dolphin hammers, fine border and acanthus scroll engraving, brushed bright finish, 14 3/4in. stock slightly cast on for the left shoulder with steel buttplate, fore-end with crosspin release, weight 6lb. 10oz., in its brass-cornered oak and leather case with handwritten charges label, the lid outer with 'A.H. ASHWORTH. BIRTENSHAW. NR. BOLTON'

Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that the gun was completed in 1870 for Henry Ashworth Esq. as a breech loading centre fire hammergun with 30in. barrels
