A 10-BORE (2 5/8IN.) TOPLEVER SINGLE-BITE SNAP-ACTION HAMMERGUN, serial no. 523,
circa 1887, 31 1/8in. black powder only damascus barrels, the rib engraved 'WILKES. MAKERS. 26 WOODHOUSE LANE. LEEDS.', the breech end with acanthus scroll detailing, 2 5/8in. chambers, carved percussion fences, bar-action locks with non-rebounding slab-sided hammers, the flats marked 'J. WILKES. LEEDS. PATENT.', border and acanthus scroll engraving surrounding naive game scenes, the underside with a central vignette of pheasant, patinated finish with very slight traces of original colour-hardening and finish in sheltered areas, 14 1/4in. figured stock with carved comb finial, including steel buttplate, fore-end with cross-pin release catch and horn finial, weight 8lb. 5oz.
