28in. nitro reproved chopperlump barrels, rib engraved 'JOHN RIGBY & CO. 72 ST. JAMES'S STREET. LONDON. AND AT DUBLIN.' and gold-inlaid '2', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl and 1/2 choke, action incorporating J. Rigby and T. Bissell patent rising third bite, patent no. 1141 of 1879, use number 608, automatic safety with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' detail, dipped-edge lockplates, articulated front trigger, carved leaf fences, best bold bouquet and scroll engraving on a matt background, retaining slight traces of original colour-hardening and finish, 14 1/2in. highly-figured stock including 1/2in. ebonite buttplate, fore-end with Rigby patent screw-grip fore-end fastener and Rigby patent ejector / non-ejector selector nut, weight 6lb. 8oz.,
Provenance: The vendor has established that this shotgun was completed November 1894 as no.2 of a pair for Colonel Arthur Saltmarshe.
Saltmarshe had been sent to New Zealand when a major in 1861. He arrived in Auckland aboard the troopship 'Louisa Minden' and saw service during the Maori uprisings. It is thought that he died soon after the turn of the century without issue.
