26in. London nitro reproved chopperlump barrels, lined to 9.3x74R calibre from .280 circa 1977, raised finely matted rib with a banner engraved 'CHARLES LANCASTER. 11. PANTON ST. HAYMARKET. LONDON.', and with a second banner gold-inlaid ' "BY ORDER CH: DIGAMBER SINGH", DONGA', tubes engraved 'CAL. 9.3X74 M/M R REGULATED FOR 235 GRAIN BULLET', the breech end with bold acanthus scroll engraving and with three telescopic sight claw mount bases, ramp-mounted gold bead fore-sight, Lancaster patent treble-grip action with side-clips, elongated top strap, automatic safety with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' detail, Thorn patent spring clip engaged back-action lockplates, patent no. 6413 of 14th March 1911, deeply carved leaf fences, bold scrolling acanthus engraving on a matt background, surrounding finely relief engraved vignettes of sika and sambar, the triggerguard with a leopard, the underside with a scrolling banner engraved 'CHARLES LANCASTER LONDON', bright finish overall, 14 3/8in. well-figured semi-pistolgrip stock with cheekpiece, sling eyes and including 1in. rubber recoil pad, fore-end with grip catch release lever, weight 9lb. 14oz., in its brass-cornered oak and leather case, label removed and replacement baize panel
Provenance: The makers have kindly informed us that this rifle was completed as a .280 with 26in. barrels circa 1920. It was built for one of the Indian Princes but the name in the ledger is indistinct.
