A FINE 14-BORE PERCUSSION DOUBLE RIFLE, no visible serial number,
circa 1850, with 24 1/4in. etched twist-steel barrels, the variegated broad damascus top-rib inlaid in gold with 'M. NOWOTNY IN WIEN' together with the number '2', dove-tailed fore-sight with silver blade and zeroing marks, dove-tailed standing notch rear-sight with additional folding leaf, a mountain goat engraved to the breech-end, fully scroll engraved long top-tang with central number '2', platinum vents, fully scroll and game-scene engraved back-action locks signed 'NOWOTNY' on the right hand side forwards of the hammer and 'IN WIEN' on the left hand lock, the right hand lock featuring a hunting dog flushing a stag from woodlands, the left hand lock with three deer in a woodland setting, scroll engraved dolphin-headed hammers, chequered walnut half-stock with carved raised cheek-piece, the end of the grip-piece flared and carved, sliding carved wood patchbox lid, iron heel-plate engraved with floral scrolls and a wild boar in a woodland setting on the tang, applied wooden pistol-grip to the trigger-guard tang, trigger-guard bow engraved with a bolting deer, double triggers (set for the right hand barrel), vacant clipped-corner square escutcheon set into the fore-end chequering, scroll engraved ramrod throat, etched damascus thimbles and original brass-tipped ebony ramrod
