A GOOD SCARCE .451 PERCUSSION SINGLE-SHOT MATCH RIFLE, serial no. 12495,
circa 1865, with round tapering 36in. barrel, Metford rifled, the top signed in gothic script 'JOHN RIGBY & CO DUBLIN & LONDON', micro-adjustable tunnel fore-sight, no provision for rear-sight, extra long top-tang fitted with a micro-adjustable vernier peep-sight, plain borderline engraved lock signed 'W & J RIGBY', Rigby monogram engraved to the tail, sliding safe forwards of the hammer, figured walnut full chequered pistol-grip half stock, chequered iron heel-plate with provision on the top-spur for a back-position tangent sight (missing), iron cap to pistol-grip, iron borderline engraved trigger-guard and horn schnabel fore-end tip with no provision for ramrod, the whole with traces of original colour throughout TOGETHER WITH a small pine-wood box of sighting accessories with a paper label signed 'JOHN McKENNA & SONS BELFAST.
Provenance: The makers have kindly informed us that this rifle was sold to W. Wells on 27th June 1865 for £23.2.0. It is described in the ledger as an 'improved match rifle' and of best quality.
