Provenance: The makers have kindly informed us that this rifle was completed in 1901 in .303 calibre with 28in. barrels for H. Castenschiold of Copenhagen.
The Castenschiold family are members of the Danish aristocracy and their seat has been Borreby Castle on the island of Zealand since the late 18th Century. The fortified manor house was built in 1556 by Johan Friis and is one of the finest buildings in the Renaissance style to survive in Denmark. The building was acquired in 1783 by Joachim Castenschiold, a General in the Danish Army. He is best-known for establishing and leading the East Danish Territorial Force against the British during the Napoleonic Wars. His efforts came to nought though when his militia men were defeated at the Battle of Koge on 29th August 1807 by General Arthur Wellesley (later 1st Duke of Wellington).
