A RARE .44-40 FACTORY ENGRAVED AND PLATED LEVER-ACTION REPEATING RIFLE, MODEL '1873 SPECIAL ORDER', serial no. 402771B,
for 1891, with octagonal 24 1/4in. barrel signed 'WINCHESTER'S REPEATING ARMS NEW HAVEN CONN USA. KINGS IMPROVEMENT PATENTED MARCH 29 1866 OCTOBER 16 1860', dove-tailed nickel-blade fore-sight, elevating ladder 'Africa' rear-sight with provision for six additional folding leaves (one missing), factory border and scroll engraved sideplates, the left hand example depicting a stag within a border engraved circle, scroll engraved sliding dust-cover, top-tang drilled for peep-sight, fitted with keeper-screws and marked 'MODEL 1873', walnut straight-hand butt-stock, iron scroll-engraved crescent heel-plate fitted with sliding central trap-door (possible traces of plating), single set-trigger, nickel-plated bottom tang, scroll engraved brass cartridge-lifter, walnut fore-end (small loss to wood on right hand side) with plated and engraved nose-cap, under-barrel full-length magazine and fitted with Winchester sling-swivels, the whole with strong traces of finish remaining
