* COLT, LONDON
A GOOD CASED .31 PERCUSSION FIVE-SHOT REVOLVER, MODEL '1849 POCKET', serial no. 8922,
for 1855 and retailed by Theophilus Murcott, London, with blued octagonal 5in. barrel (fair amount of finish remaining), the breech end signed 'ADDRESS COL COLT LONDON', London proofs, plain cylinder with roll-engraved scene (cleaned, some discolouration), open iron frame, silver-plated iron trigger-guard and grip-straps (loss to plating), scarce chequered walnut one-piece grip and articulated under-barrel loading lever, COMPLETE WITH its English market oak storage case compartmented and lined in green baize with a parchment T. Murcott trade label to the inside of the lid and accessories including a bag-shaped powder flask signed James Dixon, Sheffield, a japanned cap-tin, an 'L' shaped nipple-key and a brass ball and bullet mould, the outside of lid bearing a brass escutcheon engraved 'M. MARRIOTT, 26 MONTPELIER SQ. SW' with a central device of a chained dog passant
Provenance: Our research would indicate that the inscription on the case escutcheon is for Thomas Weatherley Montague Marriott (1812 - 1886) of Montpelier Square.
Thomas Weatherley Montague Marriott was the son of Thomas Weatherley Marriott (1791-1857), an Ironmonger of High Row, Knightsbridge who formed the Montpelier Estate and was the power behind developing Montpelier Square, Knightsbridge.
Not recently illustrious, the family was descended from a figure of some standing, Richard Marryott J.P. (c. 1626–1703) of Finchingfield, Essex, and Worlingworth, Suffolk, whose career as accountant and estate agent included senior appointments with the Duke of Norfolk, the Council of Queen Catherine of Braganza, the Bedford Level Corporation and the Duchy of Lancaster
