A FINE CASED 18-BORE PERCUSSION SINGLE-BARRELLED SPORTING RIFLE FOR BELTED-BALL, serial no. 1316,
circa 1850, with browned octagonal 33in. barrel, the top-flat signed 'JOHN DICKSON & SON, 60 PRINCES STREET EDINBURGH', long bead fore-sight, dove-tailed rear-sight with one standing notch and two folding leaves, scroll engraved colour-hardened squared patent breech with gold line and platinum plug, London proofs, border and scroll engraved colour-hardened bar-action lock signed 'JOHN DICKSON & SON' above an engraving of a felled stag, scroll engraved dolphin-headed hammer with bolted safe behind, figured walnut chequered half-stock, iron patch-box to butt, the circular lid engraved with a rope-twist border surrounding a standing stag, the hinge with scroll engraving, engraved iron heel-plate featuring a stags head on the top-spur (slight damage at toe), raised tear-drop cheek-piece, scroll engraved trigger-guard bow with pistol-grip chequered spur to tang, single set-trigger, iron ramrod thimbles, the finish remaining in a fine state of preservation with much original colour, bluing and browning (woodwork badly scuffed to cheek-piece with further bruising throughout) COMPLETE WITH its manufacturers oak storage case, compartmented and lined in pale embossed leatherette and containing a number of the original accessories including a rare winged bullet-mould, nipple key, patch, bullet and nipple pots, the original ramrod (worm cover missing), wad punch and original leather sling
Provenance: We are indebted to the author Donald Dallas, who informs us that this rifle was completed March 1852 as a "Single rifle, two grooved, case and apparatus" for Henry Davidson, Esq.
