A SCARCE CASED .451 (WHITWORTH) MILITARY-MATCH RIFLE, serial no. 752,
circa 1865, with 33in. blued barrel marked 'WHITWORTH PATENT', block with tunnel fore-sight, elevating ladder micro-adjustable match-style rear-sight, border engraved squared patent breech, solid barrel tang, border engraved bolted lock signed 'WHITWORTH' and with crowned corn bushel trade mark and the letter 'W' on the tail, figured walnut three-quarter stock with chequered grip and fore-end, border engraved blued iron mounts, plain borderline engraved patchbox to butt, iron sling mounts and ramrod, Birmingham proof marks, strong traces of original finish throughout, TOGETHER WITH the manufacturers original oak storage case, compartmented and lined in brown embossed false leather with a Whitworth Rifle Company parchment trade-label to the inside of lid and containing a number of period and original accessories including a powder-flask with white-metal mounts (at fault), a Whitworth bullet mould (small modifications), a tin for felt wads and two original paper packets of hexagonal bullets plus a number of similar loose (case interior dirty and mildewed, some compartments loose)
