A FINE CASED 16-BORE FLINTLOCK SINGLE-BARRELLED SPORTING-GUN, serial no. 1181,
circa 1790, with browned triple-stage 29 3/4in. barrel, the top-flat marked in gold 'PATENT STEEL', the underside of barrel with private proofs and marked 'DAMASCUS', small blade fore-sight, inlet poincon stamped 'JOSEPH SIMMONS' with a crown to the breech-block, platinum line and touch-hole, foliate engraved top-tang with carved sighting notch, border engraved flat bevel-edged bar-action lock with stepped tail engraved with a starburst and a hunting dog observing a game-bird in flight, the lock signed 'SIMMONS', borderline and scroll engraved hammer, figured walnut half-stock chequered at the wrist and formed wider at the toe than heel, engraved iron furniture including long-spurred heel-plate, trigger-guard bow with raised pistol-grip tang, under-barrel rib with roll-ended thimbles and brass-mounted ramrod, TOGETHER WITH a mahogany case, compartmented and re-lined in green baize for this gun and containing an embossed powder-flask and a later cleaning rod, the interior of lid with possible reproduction parchment 'SIMMONS' trade label
