A RARE 40-BORE PERCUSSION CAPPING BREECH-LOADING RIFLE, MODEL 'MACKENZIE & WENTWORTH PATENT', no visible serial number,
circa 1860, with tapering browned 27in. damascus barrel, the top signed 'H. HOLLAND' and '98 NEW BOND ST LONDON' (rubbed), the legend separated by the ladder rear-sight, dove-tailed fore-sight (blade missing from base), squared slab-sided receiver engraved with scroll-work (rubbed), the flip up breech-block operating by a chequered curved bolt-handle mounted to the rear-left, the top of the breech with border and scroll engraving, a central panel signed 'MACKENZIE & WENTWORTH' over 'PATENT' (also rubbed) and with a rear off-set nipple to the right side of top, fully border and scroll engraved hump-backed bar-action lock signed in a ribbon 'H. HOLLAND', chequered walnut half-stock with iron furniture including chequered pistol-grip spur to the lower tang, moulded horn fore-end tip and eyelets for sling
