for 1851, with 31in. fine damascus browned barrels, the top-rib signed 'THOMAS BOSS, 73 ST JAMES'S STREET, LONDON' and marked '1' for a pair, bead fore-sight, the breech-blocks with platinum line and vented plugs, fully engraved top-tang, border, scroll and game scene engraved bar action locks signed 'THOMAS BOSS', chequered walnut half-stock, an escutcheon to the underside of butt marked 'SUB SOLE SUB UMBRA VIRENS' (literally- Flourishing Under The Sun And The Shade) around a full face helmet with three feather crest, iron furniture, the trigger-guard with inlet white-metal monogram and numbered for one of a pair on the tang, steeple finial and original brass mounted ebony ramrod
Provenance: Boss gun no. 1063 was completed in 1851 as an 11 bore gun for George P. Irvine. He lived at 15 Pall Mall, London and in the 1851 census described himself as "A private gentleman living on independent means".
