A 12-BORE 1871 PATENT SNAP-ACTION BAR-IN-WOOD TOPLEVER HAMMERGUN, serial no. B6335,
for 1885, 30in. black powder only reproved bold damascus barrels (in 1984), rib engraved 'WESTLEY RICHARDS. 170 NEW BOND ST. LONDON.', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. imp. cyl. and 3/4 choke, left wall at 17, Westley Richards improved toplever snap-action, patent no. 1572 of 14th June 1871, fluted teardrop fences, rebounding sidelocks, border engraving, retaining some colour-hardening and finish (some possible sympathetic historic refinishing), 14 3/4in. stock with blued steel buttplate, the fore-end meeting the knuckle in a crab joint, with Deeley & Edge patent release lever, horn finial, weight 6lb. 4oz., in a leather case with Westley Richards triple label set, some accessories including a James Dixon chamber brush, Hawksley ladle, a wood-handled nipple key and a vintage speedloader, the case lid marked 'S.T.R. BURTON-ON-TENT'


Provenance: the Lot is accompanied by a hand written letter, confirming that the gun was privately purchased in 1974 from the grandson of the original owner, a Samuel Thomas Ratcliffe (a Ratcliffe of the Bass, Ratcliffe & Gretton Ltd brewery family)
