Provenance: The makers have kindly informed us that this rifle was completed as a best quality for 'Dowsett'.
The vendor has very kindly supplied the following provenance on this rifle:
"Built in 1974 by Holland & Holland for my late father Anthony (Tony) Michael Hoste Henley who hunted professionally for 48 years in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Sudan, Botswana and South Africa, with Ker and Downey Safaris, Hunters Africa which was called White Hunters, as well as Safari South.
The rifle was commissioned by the late Harry Dowset of "Brooke Marine" who was a regular client of my fathers, and was a gift to my father.
The rifle was built with a left hand stock, as my father was left handed. When I inherited the rifle I had it re-stocked by Harvey Roper from Penrith with a blank of Walnut.
This rifle is mentioned in my fathers book "Around the Campfire" printed by Amwell Press IBAN no 88-083724 published 1989. Reprinted by Anthony Rowe Ltd. Chippenham, Wilts. In 2002, with additional manuscript.
Understandably the rifle has seen forty odd years of good use, with my father and myself being in the hunting profession. Other than the blueing being worn and the usual knocks a working gun takes on both stocks, it is very sound and shoots straight."
Other Notes: The rifle comes with a limited edition signed copy of 'Around the Campfire' by Tony Henley, copy number 490 of a run of 500. In it, the author mentions this Lot at intervals including the following passage:
"The .375 Holland & Holland Magnum, I consider to be one of the finest and certainly most versatile rifles ever made for Africa, as one can use it on any animal from an elephant to a steinbuck with equally good results. I have used one now for many years with regular Winchester solid 300 grain and 300 grain silver-tip ammo, and have never had a malfunction."
The rifle is also supplied with the original left-handed stock.
