A RARE PAIR OF 16-BORE SIDELEVER SIDELOCK EJECTORS, serial no. 8149 / 50,
28in. nitro reproved chopperlump barrels, the ribs gold-inlaid '1' and '2' and engraved 'STEPHEN GRANT & SONS. 7. BURY STREET. ST JAMES. LONDON', and 'PATENT EJECTOR' bordered with acanthus scrollwork at the breech ends, 2 3/4in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl. and 1/4 choke (No.1) 1/4 and 1/4 choke (No.2), carved stylised acanthus leaf fences, removable striker discs, top straps gold-inlaid '1' and '2', automatic safeties, fine border and acanthus scroll engraving, retaining much original colour-hardening and finish, 15 3/4in. highly-figured stocks including 1in. leather-covered recoil pads (No.2 cracked and repaired at left underhorn), with brass escutcheons engraved with a gorged dragon's head dexter, weight 6lb. 3oz. (both), in their makers brass-cornered oak and leather double guncase, the lid exterior marked 'G.R.C. 37, CHESTER SQUARE, LONDON.'

Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that this pair of guns was completed on 27th August, 1926 with 28in. barrels for Major G.R. Codrington.

Sir Geoffrey Ronald Codrington, K.C.V.O., C.B., C.M.G., D.S.O., O.B.E., T.D. (1888 - 1973) attained the rank of Major in the Leicestershire Imperial Yeomanry (Prince Albert's Own), and fought in the Great War, where he was mentioned in despatches four times, and was wounded. In 1916 he was invested as an Officer in the Order of the British Empire, and in 1919 was decorated with the award of the Companion in the Distinguished Service Order, and in 1932 Companion in the Order of the Bath.

He served in the Second World War at Headquarters, London District, and attained the rank of Colonel in the service of the Territorial Army.

He held the office of Gentleman Usher to two British Monarchs; His Majesty King George VI and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Codrington was invested as a Commander, Royal Victorian Order (C.V.O.) in 1948, as a Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1951 and as a Knight Commander, Royal Victorian Order (K.C.V.O.) in 1953. In 1955 he held the office of High Sheriff of Wiltshire in 1955.
