A FINE CASED 18-BORE PERCUSSION DOUBLE-BARRELLED SPORTING-GUN, MODEL 'PATENT CAPLOCK', serial no. 6474,
for 1817, with subsequent conversion from flintlock by the makers in 1825, browned 30in. barrels, the top rib signed 'JOHN MANTON & SON, DOVER STREET', white metal bead fore-sight, colour-hardened breech-blocks, the rib end engraved with an academic trophy, platinum vented plugs, engraved top-tang with broad shallow sighting groove, borderline engraved colour-hardened bar-action locks further engraved with serpent headed scrolls and signed 'JOHN MANTON & SON LONDON', engraved slab-sided hammers with chequered spurs and patent detachable conical noses, figured walnut half-stock chequered at the wrist, silver clipped corner rectangular escutcheon behind top-tang, blued iron heel-plate with engraved long top-spur, trigger guard bow engraved with a further academic trophy, oval barrel key escutcheons and brass mounted ebony under-barrel ramrod, the whole retaining much period finish probably renewed at conversion; COMPLETE WITH its makers mahogany storage case (losses to one upper lid corner and repaired around lock), compartmented and lined in coarse green baize, Manton parchment trade label inside lid and containing a number of period accessories including a rare card box of wads, a cap tin, a leather shot flask and a bag-shaped copper bodied powder flask, all possibly associated
