A 20-BORE SINGLE-BARRELLED TOPLEVER HAMMERGUN, serial no. 14555,
26 7/8in. nitro reproved fine damascus barrel, short sight flat engraved 'COGSWELL & HARRISON. 142 NEW BOND ST. & 226 STRAND. LONDON.', 2 1/2in. chamber, bored approx. true cyl. carved percussion fence, rebounding back-action lock, border and acanthus scroll engraving, retaining very slight traces of original colour-hardening, 14 5/8in. highly-figured stock including 2 1/4in. wooden extension, weight 4lb. 2oz., in a canvas case with John Dickson trade label, the lid outer marked 'D. Campbell'
Provenance: The gun is supplied with three leather bound game books: 'Sportsman's Note Book', 'The Sportsman's Journal' and 'Sportsman's Record' all retailed by John Dickson & Son and relating to shooting days at the Southhall Estate, Argyll, home of the Campbell family. The Journal and Record are dated from 1879 and 1866 and relate to Lt. Col. Edward Parker Campbell 6th of South Hall. The 'Note Book', dated 1891 belonged to Duncan Campbell, son of Edward, born in 1880, killed in action on the 18th May 1915 at Festubert in France whilst serving as a Captain in the Black Watch.
