A RARE 12-BORE 1868 PATENT ROTARY-UNDERLEVER DOUBLE-BARRELLED 'ELEPHANT' RIFLE, serial no. 8706,
24in. nitro reproved bold damascus barrels (proofed BNP 12x65 PARADOX STD', broad finely file-cut rib with a banner engraved 'W.W. GREENER. ST. MARY'S WORKS. BIRMINGHAM. LAMINATED STEEL', three folding leaf sights with gold-inlaid sight lines, bead fore-sight, 2 1/2in. chambers, 11-groove rifling (full length), Jones patent rotary underlever, elongated rounded bar action, non-rebounding back-action locks, incorporating W.W. Greener self-acting striker patent, no. 800 of 1868, the sculpted hammers of hare's-ear form with hooks to draw back the strikers on cocking (strikers later replacements without hammer pegs and with rebound springs), border engraving, the right side of the action with 'SIGHTED WITH 4 DRAMS OF POWDER', retaining slight traces of original colour-hardening, 14 3/4in. figured stock with broad Prince of Wales semi-pistolgrip, sling eyes, partially chequered steel buttplate, diminutive fore-end with crosspin fastening and steel finial with protruding lifting tab, weight 11lb.
