circa 1860, with heavy round 30in. barrel deeply crowned at the muzzle, the top signed forwards of the ladder rearsight with two additional folding leaves 'WHITWORTH PATENT', patent breech with short sighting rib scroll engraved at the tip, fully scroll engraved top tang (traces of colour), border and scroll engraved bar-action lock signed 'WHITWORTH', sliding safe forwards of the fully scroll engraved dolphin headed hammer, the engraving further enhanced with depictions of birds and serpents, figured chequered walnut half-stock with scroll engraved iron patch-box and heel-plate, the lower tang with raised chequered pistol-grip spur, rounded horn fore-end tip and no provision for ramrod
