A .577-450 (M/H) CAVALRY CARBINE, MODEL 'PEABODY & MARTINI PATTERN MKIV', no visible serial number,
dated 1885, with blued 21 1/2in. barrel signed 'IMPERIAL GUN CY', block and blade fore-sight, elevating ladder rear-sight, the nocksform stamped with 'D' and 'DC' in varying combinations along with a Birmingham proofmark and possibly a trademark, typical Martini style slab-sided receiver, the left side marked 'PEABODY & MARTINI PATTERN, MANUF. BY MECHANICAL GUNS CO. MEDAL L'.A.L.V.S.' and the right 'DER IV. over '1885' over a bee trademark over a large 'III', the whole surmounted by a Queen's crown, walnut butt-stock, the left side stamped 'BEST ONE' (possibly indicating competition use), the right side with a roundel marked 'IMPERIAL GUN CY' and the dates '1871' over '1906', chequered iron heel-plate (rusted), short finger lever (much colour in sheltered areas) and full-length walnut fore-end fitted with screws for a leather sight protector (absent), moulded iron nose-cap and iron under-barrel clearing rod
