Product Details

A RARE 11x59mmR GREENE'S PATENT PROTOTYPE BOLT-ACTION MAGAZINE RIFLE, no visible serial number,
manufactured circa 1875, with reblued 31 1/2in. barrel, block and dove-tailed blade fore-sight, elevating ladder rear-sight, squared receiver marked 'GREENE'S PATENT' (faint), with tubular bolt-guide and apertures for cartridge loading and ejection to the right and left respectively, the right side with lugs for a detachable side-mounted magazine (absent), rear bolt-handle recessed into the wood, walnut full-stock with blued iron furniture, two barrel bands and under-barrel clearing-rod, together with a cd containing further information on the rifle

Provenance: According to the 'Catalogue of The Enfield Pattern Room 'British Rifles'' (Ref RB 178), the Greene magazine rifle was tested at Woolwich in May 1880. Development was sponsored by the Henry Rifle Barrel Company, and the prototypes were patented by J.D. Greene (British Pat. 2241 of June 1875). The magazine had a rotary impeller holding five cartridges and was indexed by the action of the bolt. A second trial was held later that year in the October, but was not successful due to extraction problems. The barrel had seven-groove Henry rifling
