A RARE .30 PERCUSSION BUDDING PATENT MODEL 3B FIVE-SHOT PEPPERBOX REVOLVER, serial no. 3, in a later case,
the pistol circa 1829, with moulded and fluted one-piece 3 1/4in. brass barrel group held to the body by a square socket nut with combined pricker tool, hand indexed mechanism, the exposed trigger releasing the barrels for indexing and cocking the pistol, the guarded trigger firing the pistol via an internal striker, brass frame with smooth walnut grip-panels held by three large brass screws per side, the top of frame with refreshed signature 'BUDDING' over 'MAKER' within a scrolled border, fine but refinished condition, together with a period walnut casing, relined and compartmented in blue baize for this pistol, reproduction instruction label (for a 1A model) inside lid and including a period powder flask, a turn-screw, cap-tin cleaning rod and pricker along wit a Colt style nipple-key

Provenance: Edwin Beard Budding (1795-1846) was a mill engineer from Stroud, and is probably best known for his invention of the lawn mower in 1830. He also invented the adjustable spanner, which sadly for him he did not patent and also an ingenious machine for cutting vegetables. His foray into guns was small, with this pepperbox being the best known, but he also made at least one long-arm. W. Keith Neal perpetrated the myth that only approximately 50 Budding pepperboxes were produced across at least five variations, but more recent studies have shown that the number is more likely to be in the low hundreds. Whatever, the Budding pepperbox is a rare pistol to acquire, and the 'holy grail' for pepperbox collectors
