AN UNUSUAL PAIRING OF .300 (ROOK) 1885 PATENT SELF-OPENING SIDELEVER HAMMER ROOK RIFLES, serial no. 36345 and 36349, with left and right sidelevers,
circa 1890, 28 1/8in. octagonal black powder only barrels with wave cut top flats, open sights with one folding leaf sight, white metal inlaid sight lines and marked for 50 and 100 yards, bead fore-sights, the right sides engraved 'DOBSON & ROSSON', the left sides engraved '4. MARKET HEAD DERBY' and '.300.', cleaned unsigned actions, each marked on the flats 'PATENT 1885 No. 15916', non-selective ejectors, rifle No. 36345 with left hand sidelever, No. 36349 with right hand sidelever, 14 5/8in. pistolgrip stocks with steel pistolgrip-caps and buttplates, fore-ends with Anson push rod releases and horn finials, weight 6lb. 2oz. (36345) and 5lb. 10oz. (36349), in a leather case with Charles Rosson, 4 Market Head Derby trade label, the lid outer marked 'I.N. WOODIWISS. DUFFIELD. DERBY'.
Provenance: I.N. Woodiwiss is likely to be Isaac Newton Woodiwiss (senior), born on 17th August 1869, in Derby.
Son to Sir Abraham Woodiwiss, a mason and building master who made his fortune as a railway contractor with Benton & Woodiwiss and also Mayor of Derby, Isaac would marry Maud Mary Fyer in Duffield, Derbyshire in 1890 and sire ten children, one of which, Isaac Newton (Junior) is mentioned in the books 'Letters from an Early Bird' The Life and Letters of Denys Corbett Wilson' and 'Denys Corbett Wilson - Aviations Forgotten Pioneer', involving the tragic tale of the death of Corbett Wilson, a reconnaissance pilot in the Great War and his observer, 2nd Lt. I.N. Woodiwiss, shot down by anti aircraft fire over Fournes, Belgium in 1915.
