AN UNUSUAL 16-BORE / .500-.450 (NO.2 MUSKET) TOPLEVER HAMMER CAPE RIFLE, serial no. 726,
circa 1870, 28in. black powder only bold damascus barrels, 7/8in. wide raised matt rib with centre line detail and Africa style open sights with six folding leaf sights from 100 to 600 yards and a folding ladder sight graduated from 5 to 11, the breech end gold-inlaid in gothic script 'George Armstrong & Co. Cradock. No. 726', the underside with pipes for a rod (absent), carved percussion fences, rebounding sidelocks, right hammer replaced, fine border and acanthus scroll engraving, the lockplates engraved in gothic script 'G. Armstrong & Co.', 14 1/2in. stock with sling eye and steel buttplate, the right side with a hinged engraved 'patchbox', fore-end with crosspin release and horn finial, fore-end iron screws though wood, weight 9lb. 5oz., in a brass-cornered oak and leather case
