A FINE .550 PERCUSSION SINGLE-BARRELLED SPORTING RIFLE, serial no. 5165,
circa 1835, possibly converted from flint by the maker, with well rebrowned octagonal to round 31 5/8in. barrel, the octagonal section tapering down to meet a carved girdle at the intersection, dove-tailed fore-sight, shallow notch rear-sight to the front of a matted panel on the top-flat, colour hardened scroll engraved breech-block with moulded snail and false platinum bordered poincon, platinum plug, borderline and scroll engraved colour hardened radiused lockplate with narrow rounded bar signed 'SAML. & C. SMITH, PRINCES ST. LONDON', the central section of scroll engraving inhabited by a recumbent doe, fully engraved hammer with detachable nose, single set trigger, chequered walnut half-stock with engraved patchbox to right side at heel, finger-spurred lower tang, moulded and engraved iron nose-cap with ramrod aperture, two under-barrel thimbles and horn-tipped brass-mounted ebony ramrod, much original colour to lock and breech, remainder refinished
