A RARE .58 PERCUSSION HARPER'S FERRY MODEL 1855 BRASS-MOUNTED SERVICE RIFLE, with auxiliary ring-sight and bayonet,
dated for 1857, with browned round 33in. barrel, block and blade fore-sight, side-mounted bayonet lug, long-range ladder rear-sight, nipple bolster with screwed plug, solid top-tang with cheese-head top-nail, flat bevel-edged lock with central Maynard tape-primer mechanism marked with an eagle device, the bar of the lock marked 'U.S. over 'HARPERS FERRY', the tail of lock bearing the date, curved and moulded hammer, walnut full-stock with brass furniture, the 'patch-box' containing a cross-hair ring-sight with integral muzzle-ring and a spare nipple, two brass barrel-bands and nose-cap, iron under-barrel cup-ended ramrod and iron swivels, together with a period brass hilted sabre bayonet for same, no scabbard
Provenance: Research conducted in 2003 discovered that early production Harpers Ferry 1855 rifles all had brass furniture. Apparently 3544 were so produced, with later production losing the auxiliary sight and using iron. When Confederate forces destroyed the arsenal by fire in April 1861, of the 3450 Model 1855 rifles on hand, 2800 of them were the brass-mounted types and were lost, which undoubtedly accounts for their scarcity today
