A RARE CONFEDERATE PROCURED 54-BORE PERCUSSION KERR PATENT REVOLVER SIGNED L.A.C., serial no. 2561, (patent use 2497),
circa 1861, with blued 5 5/8in. octagonal barrel marked 'L.A.C.' and with London proofs, small blade fore-sight, shallow notch rear-sight, solid top-strap, blued frame with plain five-shot cylinder numbered '2497' in script on the side and 'stamped '2561' on the front face, colour-hardened curved lockplate signed 'LONDON ARMOURY', colour-hardened side-hammer, chequered one-piece walnut grip with distinctive 'J.S' and anchor inspector's stamp to front below the front tang, iron butt-cap and lanyard ring to base, guarded trigger, under-barrel hinged loading lever, the whole retaining a strong amount of blued finish, colour faded to grey
Provenance: The Confederacy acquired many arms from foreign countries. Apart from the legendary LeMat revolver (see lot 650 in this sale), other popular revolvers purchased by the South included Lefaucheux revolvers from France and Belgium and Kerr revolvers from the London Armoury Co. in England. Many, but not all Kerr revolvers were inspected by the Confederate officer John Southgate.
The London Armoury Co. produced about 11,000 54-bore revolvers from 1859-1866 and it would appear that a large part of that production was purchased by the Confederacy
