A RARE GERMAN 18-BORE BREECH-LOADING FLINTLOCK SPORTING RIFLE,
mid-18th century, with 40 1/2in. swamped octagonal sighted barrel rifled with eight straight grooves and with screw-plug at the breech, iron tang, flat bevelled lock, walnut full stock (some cracks and repairs to fore-end) carved in low relief with scrollwork behind the barrel-tang and around the raised cheek-piece (carving worn), sliding wooden patchbox-cover carved en suite, brass mounts including engraved trigger-guard with raised finger-rest, and later brass-tipped ramrod (light discolouration to iron parts), with iron key for the breech-loading screw-plug.
