A PAIR OF 12-BORE RIGBY & BISSELL 1879 PATENT SIDELOCK EJECTOR / NON-EJECTOR SHOTGUNS, serial no. 17351 / 2,
30in. nitro chopperlump replacement barrels (by the makers, No.1 re-proved in 2012), broad ribs engraved 'JOHN RIGBY & CO. 72. ST. JAMES'S ST. LONDON.' in gothic script, the breech ends with bold scroll engraving and gold-inlaid '1' and '2', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. imp. cyl. and 1/4 choke, treble-grip actions incorporating J. Rigby and T. Bissell patent rising third bite, patent no. 1141 of 1879, use numbers 938 and 939, carved leaf fences, slender toplevers gold-inlaid '1' and '2', automatic safeties with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' details, dipped-edge lockplates, best bold border and acanthus scroll engraving, brushed bright and reblued finish overall, 14 3/4in. well-figured replacement stocks including 1in. rubber recoil pads, No.1 repaired at left underhorn, fore-ends with Rigby patent grip catch release levers and ejector / non-ejector selector nuts, weight 6lb. 12oz., in their brass-cornered oak and leather case with some accessories
Provenance: The makers have kindly informed us that this pair of shotguns were completed July 1906 with 30in. barrels for the Earl of Donoughmore. They subsequently fitted new barrels at a later date (date not recorded).
