circa 1850, the barrel probably from an earlier rifle (possibly flintlock), with browned twist octagonal barrel, the raised top-flat signed in gothic script 'R. FENTON, LONDON', replacement dove-tailed fore-sight, dove-tailed standing notch rear-sight with four additional folding leaves, colour-hardened breech-block (faded) with two engraved bands, foliate detail and platinum vented plug, rope-twist band, martial trophy and scroll engraving to the top-tang, border and scroll engraved bar-action lock (strong traces of colour), scroll engraved dolphin-headed hammer with sliding safe behind, walnut half-stock with semi saw-back chequered full pistol-grip, the grip-spur with inlet engraved square socket for peep-sight (missing), raised cheek-piece, engraved iron heel-plate, border engraved blued square-backed trigger-guard bow with a central engraving of a standing stag, double set-triggers, engraved iron nose-cap with integral ramrod throat, two ramrod thimbles with rolled ends and ball-ended ebony ramrod, strong traces of period finish remaining
