Provenance: The date of manufacture of this gun is between 1875 and 1887, so could have been made for either the 7th or 8th Duke of Manchester.
William Drogo Montagu, 7th Duke of Manchester (1823 - 1890) was MP for Bewdley and Huntingdonshire. He first had a son to Sarah Maria Morris, and when Sarah was eight months pregnant, the Montagu family had her married off to Samuel Palmer.
George Victor Drogo Montagu, 8th Duke of Manchester (1853 - 1892) achieved the rank of Captain in the Royal Irish Fusiliers. In 1876 he married Dona Maria Consuelo Iznaga del Valle, the daughter of a wealthy Cuban plantation owner and renowned beauty. It was widely accepted that he married for her money, and she married for his titles. In 1890 George succeeded his father in the dukedom and took his seat in the House of Lords. He was declared bankrupt the same year.
