OGER LEBLAN, MAASTRICHT
A 16-BORE FLINTLOCK SPORTING GUN, no visible serial number,
circa 1725, with brushed bright two-stage 46 1/2in. barrel with moulded band at the intersection, the forward half with 'hogs-back' sighting ridge and applied iron bead fore-sight, the octagonal rear section struck with three brass-lined Dutch marks for Maastricht (or possibly Nijmegen) and stamped 'COMA' within a rectangle at the breech-end, eared brass rear-sight attached to the barrel by a ring, engraved brass-covered top-tang, brass-lined touch-hole, curved and faceted polished lockplate with moulded border signed below the frizzen-spring 'OGER LEBLAN', relief scroll engraving inhabited by monsters, carved relief chiselled grotesque mask to the tail, the hammer with further relief carving of foliage and monster heads, carved relief chiselled grotesque mask to the front of frizzen, walnut full-stock with moulded borders along the fore-end edges and ramrod channel (large portion expertly replaced), further moulded borders around the furniture and locks, acanthus scroll relief carving around the top-tang, front of comb and rear edge of the raised cheek-piece, large brass heel-plate with rococo moulded border and a figure of Mars on the top-spur, brass finger-grooved lower raised trigger-guard tang, moulded trigger guard with raised acanthus foliage on the bow and vase finial, turned and faceted brass ramrod throat with acanthus carving to the surrounding wood, three en-suite brass ramrod thimbles (two expertly replaced) and probable original horn tipped wood ramrod (some cleaned mild pitting to iron surfaces
