30in. nitro reproved fine damascus barrels, rib engraved 'J. PURDEY & SONS. 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET. LONDON.', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. 1/2 choke in both, wall thicknesses at 18+, Thomas Woodward patent hammerless push-forward-underlever snap action, patent 651 of 17th February 1876, use no. 645, fences carved in relief with spiral details, rounded bar, automatic safety with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' detail, best fine floral and acanthus scroll engraving, the underlever with finely chequered panels, retaining slight traces of original colour-hardening, 14in. well-figured stock with applied leather buttpad, weight 6lb. 2oz.
Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that this gun was completed in 1879 as No.2 of a pair for a J. Emsley.
