JOSEPH ROGERS & SONS, SHEFFIELD
AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE HIGH LUXURY DAGGER,
circa 1865, with mirror-polished unusual 'double ox-tongue' spear-point blade, complicated triangular ricasso with decorative double-step, the ricasso signed 'JOSEPH ROGERS & SONS, 6 NORFOLK STREET, SHEFFIELD, ENGLAND', scalloped nickel-silver cross-guard, smooth ivory grip carved with a stylised flower near the guard and etched with a crest of a griffons head above a wreath with an eagle's wing in its mouth to a flat-topped carved pommel (old age crack to one side of the hilt) TOGETHER WITH its leather belt-scabbard with scalloped edge nickel mounts
Other Notes: For an identical dagger see 'Exhibition Knives, Joseph Rogers & Sons, The Samuel Setian Collection' pages 132/133, by Abel Domenech. The entry in this work suggests that the blade shape was a unique pattern, this example has subsequently disproved this theory
