STARR ARMS CO. USA
A RARE .52 (RIMFIRE) FALLING-BLOCK SERVICE CARBINE OF BRITISH WAR DEPT. ISSUE, serial no. 36242,
circa 1865, with 21in. blued sighted barrel marked 'STARR ARMS CO. YONKERS. N.Y.', action incised with the number '40' and tang marked 'STARR'S PATENT SEPT. 14th 1858', back-action lock marked 'STARR ARMS CO. YONKERS. N.Y.', walnut stock with 'WD' and broad arrow stamp on the right side, iron mounts, and saddle-ring (some discolouration throughout), U.S. inspection marks.
Other Notes: The Starr carbine was another American arm which entered service too late to see action during the civil war. As a consequence, many were sold off to foreign governments as 'surplus'. Britain and America were in diplomatic conflict after the civil war due to Britain supplying the Confederate forces with arms, and were worried about some of their territories close to America so started to bolster the defences on the Canadian border, so purchased amongst others 2250 Spencer carbines and perhaps as few as 250 Starr carbines from third parties on the surplus market. It is believed the Starr carbines acquired were issued to Field Artillery regiments. The gun is accompanied with a copy of a House of Commons address dated 8th August 1870 showing this acquisition.
