AN EXCEPTIONAL CASED 54-BORE PERCUSSION RIFLED TRAVELLING PISTOL, no visible serial number,
circa 1840, with octagonal browned 6 1/2in. twist iron barrel, the top-flat signed 'ALEXANDER THOMSON EDINBURGH', colour-hardened engraved patent breech, dovetailed blued fore-sight, full scroll engraved and colour-hardened top-tang with sighting groove, platinum plug, borderline and scroll engraved colour-hardened bar-action lock signed 'A. THOMSON', scroll engraved dolphin-headed hammer, peacock blued pins and screws, walnut half-stock with finely chequered swept pistol-grip, colour-hardened grip-cap with engraved central trap-door, scroll engraved blued trigger-guard tang and bow, colour-hardened finial and barrel key escutcheons, moulded ebony fore-end tip, the whole with only slight storage marks and generally appearing unfired; TOGETHER WITH its makers oak storage case, compartmented and lined in purple velvet (some fading) and containing a full complement of accessories including a scissors ball-mould, nipple-key, three-way flask, loading rod, caps and balls, all original to this piece, the inside of lid with clipped-corner trade label listing the address as '10 UNION PLACE EDINBURGH'
