PURDEY
A 12-BORE 1863 PATENT (FIRST PATTERN) THUMBHOLE-UNDERLEVER HAMMERGUN, serial no. 7120,
29 7/8in. black powder only reproved bold damascus barrels, sunken rib with 314 1/2 Oxford Street address (illegible) and '2', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl. in both, Purdey patent thumbhole underlever, patent no. 1104 of 2nd may 1863, carved percussion fences, rebounding back-action locks with blued dolphin hammers, border and acanthus scroll engraving, the underside engraved 'PURDEY'S PATENT', brushed bright finish (some pitting), 14 1/4in. figured stock (refinished) including 7/8in. ebonite extension, weight 6lb. 5oz.
Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that the gun was completed in 1865, though the records state little else other than 'double barrel'
