A RARE, POSSIBLY UNIQUE CASED 32-BORE PERCUSSION RIFLE FOR SUPER-IMPOSED LOADS WITH EXTRA 12-BORE BARRELS, serial no. 2273,
circa 1845, with re-browned twist iron 31 1/4in. octagonal single multi-groove rifle barrel, the top-flat signed 'W. & J. KAVANAGH 12 DANE STREET DUBLIN' (refreshed), silver blade fore-sight, dove-tailed standing notch rear-sight, shaped full-width scroll engraved breech-block with two nipples and a further raised border and scroll engraved panel to the centre, the right hand side with moulded side buttress drilled with the ignition flue, both sides with moulded walnut fore-end fillets, the 12-bore barrels of conventional form, twist-iron and 29 3/4in. in length, the top-rib signed in a similar manner, border and acanthus scroll engraved top-tang, border, acanthus scroll and gamescene engraved bar action locks with dipped tails and signed 'KAVANAGH' forwards of the scroll engraved dolphin headed hammers, figured walnut half-stock chequered at the wrist, engraved iron furniture, silver escutcheons to wrist and barrel key and brass mounted mahogany ramrods with both sets of barrels; COMPLETE WITH its manufacturers brass cornered stained oak storage case, compartmented and lined with green baize for the gun with both sets of barrels and including a number of period accessories probably original to the gun
