AN 8-BORE FLINTLOCK 'ARQUEBUS', UNSIGNED,
1639 or earlier, almost certainly with its origins in Germany and probably made as a matchlock with subsequent conversion to flint, possibly even with a wheelock phase between, with heavy swamped multi-groove rifled octagonal 38 1/2in. barrel, dove-tailed white metal blade fore-sight, large standing notch rear-sight with arrow shaped finial, barrel makers mark of 'P.V.' within a rectangle struck at breech, borderline engraved lock of wheelock form with extended semi cloverleaf tail (traces of further engraving), diminutive cock with over-sized top jaw squared at the face, ring-top jaw screw, lozenge pan with removable frizzen-face, carved tail to the frizzen spring, walnut full-stock of matchlock form, brass inlay behind the top-tang, square socket for peep-sight (missing) with white metal oval escutcheon behind engraved with the gothic letters 'A.T.' and dated '1847', further brass inlay to left side of top-tang engraved with martial trophies, brass floral inlay to front of comb behind thumb-notch, pierced and engraved brass inlay of two crowned lions supporting an armorial shield inlaid with mother of pearl and engraved with two maltese-type crosses, one above the other, flat brass engraved heel-plate with squared top-spur and dated '1639', large brass shoulder pommel, hogs-bristle set trigger, brass trigger-guard with finger-grooved bow, large yellow metal plate in fore-end for rest, barrel-pin holes reinforced with horn, horn ramrod pipe and replaced ramrod
