Product Details

CHURCHILL (GUNMAKERS) LTD.
A .243 WIN. 'DE LUXE' BOLT-MAGAZINE SPORTING RIFLE, serial no. B4224,
23 3/4in. unsighted nitro barrel engraved 'CHURCHILL (GUNMAKERS) LTD. ORANGE STREET. GUNWORKS. LEICESTER SQUARE. LONDON.' and with the calibre designation, F.N. Mauser receiver mounted with a Pfeifer Optik 4x telescopic sight, side safety, hinged floorplate with push button release, engraved recoil blocks, the action and furniture deeply carved with acanthus scrollwork on a matted background, blued finish, figured pistolgrip stock with cheekpiece and raised comb, beavertail fore-part, horn finial, ornate chequering borders, engraved steel pistolgrip-cap (with trap), sling swivels, 14in. pull including buttplate, weight 9lb. 5oz.

Provenance: This 'De Luxe' rifle was pictured on the front cover of Guns Review, Volume 3 Number 7 of July 1963 (copy accompanies the Lot).

It is referred to in Don Masters Book 'The House of Churchill' on page 299 as being their new .243 De Luxe rifle launched after the company's break with Cogswell & Harrison earlier that year. The stock is mentioned as being made and chequered by Bill Holland from a deluxe-grade French walnut blank.

The Management of Churchill's was so impressed with the cover image of the Guns Review edition that they used it on the cover of their own company catalogues from August 1963 to 1964 - a big change from the traditional plain white looseleaf version that had been produced since the 1930's.
