JOSEPH LANG & SONS 16-BORE 1863 (SECOND PATTERN) PURDEY THUMBHOLE-UNDERLEVER HAMMERGUN, serial no. 3881, for 1869, 30in. black powder only damascus barrels (loose with some pits and dents, right bore measurement marginal), broad rib engraved 'JOSEPH LANG & SONS. 22 COCKSPUR STREET. LONDON.', and with acanthus scroll detailing at the breech-end, 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl. in both, action incorporating J. Purdey second pattern thumbhole underlever patent No. 1104 of 1863, use number 669, the action flats marked 'PURDEY'S PATENT BOLT.', carved percussion fences, back-action locks with non-rebounding hammers, fine border and acanthus scroll engraving, patinated finish overall, 13 1/2in. highly figured stock (oval insert to left side), including horn buttplate, fore-end with cross-pin release catch, weight 6lb. 1oz.
