SEGAR, LONDON
A 14-BORE FLINTLOCK SINGLE-BARRELLED SPORTING GUN, no visible serial number,
circa 1810, with rebrowned octagonal to sixteen-sided to round 33 3/4in. barrel stamped with a Spanish maker's mark signed 'PISTOLA' together with a standing lion and three quality marks (one gold inlaid), the top-flat further signed '4 NOBLE ST, CHEAPSIDE' (rubbed), moulded girdle at the intersection, engraved knock-off breech with platinum line and vent, engraved top-tang inhabited by a hunting dog, flat, slightly curved lock with stepped and rounded tail and signed 'SEGAR' below the rain-proof pan, roller frizzen (re-faced), replacement cock, finely chequered walnut half-stock (hairline to left cheek), iron furniture and provision for under-barrel ramrod (absent)
Provenance: This sporting gun is the work of Samuel Segar, who was apprenticed to W. Beckwith until 1807 when he was turned over to his father, becoming free of the Gunmakers Company in 1814, passing away in 1855. His widow continued the business at the same address until 1859
