A 12-BORE SIDELOCK EJECTOR, serial no. 17289,
for 1913, 30in. nitro reproved barrels (in 2026), the rib engraved 'CHARLES BOSWELL. MAKER. STRAND. LONDON. W.C.', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl. and 1/4 choke, treble-grip action with hidden third bite, automatic safety with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' detail, gold-inlaid cocking-indicators, border engraving with acanthus scrollwork, floral bouquets and some individual rose motifs, 14 3/8in. figured stock, weight 6lb. 10oz, in a canvas case
Provenance: The vendor has kindly supplied the following:
"The gun itself has an interesting history and story behind it. My family originates for Ely in Cambridgeshire. My grandfather Sidney Ward, won the gun in a game of poker during one very wet Saturday afternoon, so wet that the rest of the day's shooting was abandoned. Both grandfather and the gun's owner had bet all the cash they had on them and only had their guns to continue their hands, placing both of the table. Having lost the hand, the guns owner insisted that my grandfather take it, despite him instead offering to accept cash when the Banks reopened on Monday.
"No." He said. "You've won that gun fair and square and I want you to have it."
The gun was then given to my father Tony Ward, who struggled with it in favour of his own gun. So he passed it onto me.
Once I'd got used to it, I was very reluctant to use any other gun for any type of shooting.
The gun has long barrels with choke and double choke, meaning it needs a good shot to use it. But it has one heck of a range and killing length. People have been amazed how far away it can kill game from.
I brought it with me when I moved to the Cotswolds. I've taken it to several clay shoots and it has caused a lot of interest to see such a gun used at them.
It was originally looked after by Gallyons at Cambridge, then Norwich when my family moved to North Suffolk. Richardson's at Halesworth have also helped servicing it.
This is a super fun gun. I want somebody to have it who is really going to enjoy it. I look forward to seeing it sold at your November/December auction."
