circa 1866, with round 20in. barrel rifled in six grooves, block and blade fore-sight, folding carbine ladder rear-sight, the top of barrel at breech marked 'M1865', slab-sided receiver with the under-lever forming the trigger-guard, 'Stabler' cut-off forwards of the trigger, external back-action lock with side-hammer, walnut butt-stock with traces of two inspector's cartouches to left side of wrist, iron heel-plate with magazine housed in centre, iron saddle-bar with loose ring, walnut splinter fore-end and single barrel-band
