AN INTERESTING PATTERN 1897 VICTORIAN INDIAN INFANTRY OFFICER'S DRESS SWORD OWNED BY COLONEL NAPIER G.B. GOODFELLOW, CIE, 1880-1964,
circa 1900, with 32 1/2in. unsharpened edges with central fuller to each side, etched to one side with foliate scroll-work, the initials 'NGBG', crown and Royal coat-of-arms with foliate scroll-work, Victoria's Imperial cypher and a blank panel over, blade spine numbered '100701', ricasso with brass proved plug to one side and retailer details 'GUTHRIE / & VALENTINE / CORK St. / LONDON / W' over, pierced bowl guard with Victoria's Imperial cypher, wire-bound fish-skin grip, with a clean and lightly used brown leather field scabbard, a steel scabbard with two suspension rings, plus a brown leather case with the flap carrying the initials 'N. G. B. G.', some small patches of staining to the blade and small rust patches to the guard, steel scabbard with some surface rusting and shallow denting towards the chape, case worn
Provenance: COLONEL NAPIER G.B. GOODFELLOW, CIE, 1880-1964; commissioned into the 128th Bombay Pioneers, served throughout the First World War, largely in Mesopotamia, mentioned in Dispatches four times. Between the wars, was responsible for building many roads in very difficult country, e.g. to Kirkuk, and which are still in current usage.
